My darling Maggie:
Gee
I missed you honey. It seemed like I was never going to get back this
afternoon. As soon as I came back I went up to see if I had any mail- I did,
three letters from you. And I really needed them. I had a pretty nice trip.
Another guy and I left here about 8:30 A.M. and arrived in Le Havre around 4
P.M. We had to drive around Le Havre awhile until we found the transit camp
when we stayed overnight and had supper and breakfast and dinner on Thursday.
We finished our business over there at noon and then started back. We made
plans to stop at Deauville on the way back and we did. We arrived about 3:30
and then it took us awhile until we found a hotel to stay. Boy was I ever
lonesome in my room. It was the first soft bed and hotel room I slept in since
I left you. It was a nice soft bed with sheets. I fell asleep thinking you were
beside me. I had some very lovely thoughts. Anyway we had our supper at the
Casino, that’s on the post card, the French waitress even poured our coffee,
and guess what I didn’t even try to make one, and you know me and my
waitresses. We didn’t get up for breakfast but did get up about 10 A.M. walked
around town which is very beautiful. I can’t even try to explain it to you. The
whole town is like those cards, just like you see in pictures on the movies. We
then had our dinner and after that we came back. I really enjoyed myself, but
the only thing I didn’t like was missing writing to you. I really did miss you
honey no kidding. Just like being away from you for a day or two.
Say
honey now that you are home maybe you better look up Thelma. I could use those
points. I never thought of that before, seems like a good
idea.
[edited for content] I love you my darling Maggie, ever so
much. You can believe this or not, but I saw some very beautiful women on this
trip but they never bothered me for I know you have them stopped by far.
Looking at you and at them, honey you are the most beautiful thing alive. I
thought at one time that you were the prettiest woman in the U.S. but now I
take that back- it’s the whole world now. I’m really serious. You can send me a
quarter if you like but I mean it.
I
could use a good drink of that Philadelphia right now. I think maybe you better
buy a bottle every once in awhile and bring it with you when I get home. I
don’t want to waste any time looking around for whiskey when I am back.
Is
Dot going to have her baby at home? I guess if she does you will have a swell
time with all those kids around. You will soon be able to start some kind of
team if any of us come home again.
I
too get that periodically feeling and I seem to be the same as you, lately I
have been pretty bad too. [edited for content]
[edited for content] If possible I would like a shower in our
room. I like your idea about the drinks. We can have ice and some kind of soda
if you want, or just use the soda for chasers, which ever you prefer. If you
want us to get into pretty robes you just better buy you and I one. Look in
Allentown, you always said you wanted to get me one. Yes I could hold you in a
big easy chair, and kiss you, and talk to you and pet you, but you would never
get too heavy for me. I like to see you get in a playful mood and hear your life
story I don’t even get tired of it. I never get tired of anything you do. Your
letters don’t sound silly to me, they are good for me. I know I still have that
old spark left in me. I’m not kidding you my darling, I get all shaky writing
about the things I just did. I think I better stop writing to you, maybe you
don’t like it. I’d just give anything to grab you and hold you in my arms and
give you a good hard kiss. I love you so much my darling.
Goodnight
sweetie- pleasant dreams
All my love,
Your
Pres.
P.S. I do love you.
