Hi Pauline & Frank-
I arrived at
the Gap around 3:30 A.M. [The] bus made two rest stops; one for 30 minutes,
[when we] stopped in for cups of coffee. We must [have] been traveling on the
super highway because it was smooth riding.
It was
snowing pretty hard at some town this side of
When we
left the bus station at
Well, it
didn’t work out because there were two women and two more soldiers who had the
same idea. This seat holds 5 persons, [and] one of the soldiers took his pillow
and climbed up in the baggage rack and fell asleep. I expected him to tumble
out going around a curve, but he just laid there and snored away.
The food
you insisted [on] me taking came in handy because I didn’t get up for breakfast
at camp so I ate it later. I wish I took the bottle of beer also.
There will
be no weekend pass this coming week, so it looks like the men who are left will
be sent to camp Pickett [in] Virginia. There is another notice for them to pick
up whatever winter clothing they pack.
This
morning several more men turned in their bedding and clothes. They are going to
a separations center for discharge. I am sweating out the bulletin board to see
under what paragraph my name will be.
Well that’s
all there is for now. That fellow Harris I told you about just woke up. He
looks sober for a change, somebody told him. They are looking for two more K. P.’s. That’s all he wanted to hear. He sure took off in a
hurry.
There’s a
couple of letters I forgot to mail to you. I told you of the contents of the
letter when I was home but I’ll send them along with this one anyway.
Pete
