Dear Mom and Pop:

I just got your letter but didn’t get a chance to answer it until now. I was going to a show tonight but I think I’ll take a shower and hit the sack earl instead. I got a surprise the other day. I made a 99 service record test, it’s the highest to get. (excuse the bragging) I’m going to try to make seaman 1st Class in school but if I don’t get it I’ll get it when I get to my next ship or station: I can make about 55 to 60 words per minute now but I have to cut down a little on my errors. You asked if we are allowed to receive cake and candy. You bet! Another thing I wish you would start sending me the newspaper. I am getting sick and tired of these west coast papers. I went to a little Lutheran Church in Diego last Sunday. It’s really nice. I’m going to go again if I can. This week I get a 36 hour liberty, so I think I’ll go swimming at the beach if it’s warm enough. You’d be surprised how cold it gets down here. Well Mom I guess I’ll close now. Take good care of yourself.

All my love

Alfred
