Dearest Mother, Sept. 17,1944
Here it is Sunday and it’s very quiet and it’s been cloudy all day and it looks like rain so this kind of a day makes it lonesome and wishing me were home. As for our work, it hasn’t been much lately all we’re doing now is getting ready and ma this will be my last letter for awhile. I don’t know for how long but don’t worry if you don’t hear from me for I’ll be alright. Look, if you get a card or something of my change in address, would you give it to Rita so she can write and by that way I won’t be too long without mail. How did you make out in getting her that cedar chest? If not get her one for Christmas huh ma? I asked her what she wanted else for her birthday and she said nothing so I guess we’ll wait until Christmas unless something else comes up.
How is everyone else up home? Fine shape and as for me, I’m just fine and I’m putting on some weight lately so in all I’m feeling swell. How you feeling now ma? Do your legs bother you much? I hope not. Is pa still working steady in the mill? I sure wish I was working up there but it won’t be long now ma and I’ll be home for good and will we celebrate huh ma, and have some of your swell cooking again and that’s something I’ve missed a lot since I’ve been in the army but most of all I miss my dear folks and I think of you a lot and some of the good times we used to have, but they’re coming back so chin up ma and even my square chin is up.
Well ma must close for today so don’t forget what I told you: not to worry if you don’t hear from me for I’ll be okay and I take good care of myself and I know your all praying for me so I’ve got good backing up huh ma? So here, hoping I’ll hear from you soon and that I’ll be able to write so you don’t worry ma. So for now, it’s just bye bye.
xxxx all my love

P.S. Here some pictures of me and the deer. Remember you asking me is I had them, well here they are ma.
