            Dear Mother

I am well and hope you are the same. We have moved since I last wrote you. I didn’t want to write until we were sure we would be here a while. Now we are getting our basic training, and after that we will be able to get a furlough [that] will last five more weeks. I may not be able to get home for Easter.

I will get paid next week and will send you some more money. Duke wrote and told me you received it. I had sent you a letter already when I received the letter from Duke and Edith. Tell old Zabby I sent him a letter the same time I sent Duke one. Ed Green sent me a letter and told me about the two deaths; Mr Pritchett and Bud Skimer. I get all the news of Merchantville even if you won’t tell me. Tell Gladys after our basic training our company is supposed to move to Virginia. A lot of soldiers want to come home with me so please get rid of the Bed Bugs. Its spring now and I know its getting warm there like it is here, and them fellows are walking study. Tell Elizabeth hello. I guess Laretta got away from you now and is saying anything. Write more often it’s a shortage of stamps at camp. I am a guard in the City of Needles. I have a rifle loaded and I carry it on my shoulder around the station. I received your letter, but you did not say you got the money. I guess you have already sent another letter, next time try to get some airmail stamps they cost 6c a piece. I still have money I don’t need any.
