Dear Mother
I received
the money you sent and was glad to hear from you. I am well and hope you are
the same. My pay hasn’t held up. You see, we have about 280 men in our company.
Every pay day they all ask the mailman to make a money order out for them and
it takes time. Next time when you send special delivery, put a ten cent and a
six cent stamp. It cost 16¢ for air mail special. I got the money a day after
Easter. How did you enjoy Easter? I went to Needles, to Church, and had a good
time all day. I’m going to Los Angles next week, on a three day pass. I’ll send
you some pictures then. That won’t bother with my furlough weekend passes we
get now. Next furloughs, tell Gladys hello. I’ll send her some pictures of Los
Angles sometime next week. I also get paid next week. My fare home will cost
nearly seventy dollars. Try to save it for me. I’ll make it a payday. I’ll also
send papers for you to fill out soon to get money every month. Fill it out and
send it right back. I guess Paul will have to fill it out for you. It’s good
and worn out here. I’ve been on guard duty for the last two days. We have one
prisoner. I have a large rifle. If he gets away, I have to spend his time. I got
orders to shoot if he starts to leave. I am glad my time is over guarding him.
I didn’t want to shoot him. I was glad we got along fine. I’ll have stripes
answer soon.
Your son
I get a lot of letters from Merchantville.
Did you see Elinore at the funeral?
