Honey:
August 4, 1944
Well,
here I am again. This time I live in Roy’s
old barracks, but not quite in the same bunk. I got here in plenty of time, in
fact two or three hours early. Also had a good nights sleep in Sand
Point—on a bed, for a change.
I
had quite a time getting to Willmar
to catch my train. The bus run out of gas just a couple of miles out from
Olivia and I had to help the driver try to get the bus started because he
thought that he had plenty of gas and it was some kind of motor trouble.
Finally about 1030 I got a little nervous about not making it to Willmar on
time so I got out and hitch-hiked and got a ride with the first car going that
way. Got there in plenty of time because the train was a little late (as
usual). However, I guess that little brown-red bus that we thought was so
“hot” didn’t turn out to be such a bargain after all. Yes, it
started to, and was scheduled to go to, Willmar,
but it didn’t quite make it. The best part of it was that after roaming
along the streets of Willmar
in a light drizzle I spied the little red wagon pulling in a little late.
However, I was still glad that I got out and hitch-hiked. There’s nothing
like getting here a little early.
I
haven’t got any word about my new assignment yet, so I can’t tell
you where I’ll be or what I’ll be doing while here. Unless I am
greatly mistaken I will have to go to OGU headquarters and work there. If I
don’t, I’ll probably have to work here in the barracks office as a
yeoman. Either way, I’ll have a pretty good deal out of it, and it
probably be a lot easier and a nicer job here in the barracks, but I suppose,
they will have enough non-rated men here take care of the job, and I’ll
have to go to head-quarters—oh well, will let you know when I find out
anything about that.
Well,
it’s now time for me to quit so the typewriter can be utilized for
business. (Oh yes, I had quite a wash job today, sea bag, hammock, and cap and
underwear with 2 pairs of socks.). All for now.
All
my love & stuff, Daddy
Did the kids miss me?
