Colonel Sid Wells was born in Newark, New Jersey. He served in a Mortar Battalion during the Second World War. Already in the service when Pearl Harbor was bombed in December, 1941, his letter reflects the difficult decision of so many during wartime, whether or not to marry. Soldiers were confronted with the prospect of returning a changed man, or even of not returning. Colonel Wells weighed the question of marriage and he and his girlfriend were wedded in January, 1942.
