Dearest Hal-I was delighted to get your first V-mail letter yesterday-the first one I had seen.  It came through in two weeks.  Page came to see me Tuesday and I purely enjoyed seeing her.  She looks well and says Sam is fine.  Mr. Black sent me a bag of apples, grimes, and pippins, which I am enjoying.  Wish you could have some.  Are there any apples where you are?  You spoke of the autumn leaves-they have been very pretty but many trees are bare now, though the hillside is still very pretty.  We have had so much rain.  Last week it rained from Monday till Friday 12 inches-and did great damage all over the state.  Bridges and roads were washed out between here and after-the whole lower part of Waynesboro flooded.  Fredericksburg was probably the worst off as a damn broke and washed away huge tanks of gasoline belonging to Gulf and Pure Oil Co.  Also about half the town was flooded.  Most apples fell off that had not been picked-estimated that two million damage in Augusta County.  I heard through Marguerite that Pauline had been to Taquerell and that she said they were coming by Staunton and get some of their things and go out to Charlottesville.  That is the first news of them anyone has heard.  I don’t know whether Bits is coming before the Draft Board or not or what is going to write you a letter because there is not enough space.  I am feeling fine-weigh 146.
