Dearest Hal,

Today we are snowed in. For three days, we have not been able to get the cars out of the garage. Peggy did not get to work yesterday, but today the highways are scraped so they made it. At first, we had sleet, which makes a layer of ice over everything; then, we had several inches of snow on top of that. You can’t drive at all without chains. We go out in the car only when necessary, anyway, so we haven’t even tried to get them out. If you did skid on the ice, you would probably not get any repairs before spring. I try to take the very best care of our car, so I don’t take it out when there is any ice on the roads.

Sam and I were due to go to town this week to take our shots, but we have not been so far and I think we will just have to miss this time. That is quite a bother, but I hope it is going to help. I suspect it is too soon to tell if we are really going to be helped or not. I imagine next fall during ragweed season will tell the tale.

I have been outdoors with Sam, all morning, playing in the snow. I don’t believe I have ever seen a child who enjoys snow anymore than Sambo does. We tried to make a snowman but the snow was too dry and wouldn’t stick together. Sam managed to get himself covered with it. We found an old sled, a relic of my childhood, no doubt, and I had to pull Sam around on it. He is getting heavy now, so, after a while that ceases to be very much fun.

How are you sure you don’t have to file any income tax returns this year? I can’t find anyone here who has heard anything about waiting after the duration to file one. Please send me the necessary data. Just your taxable earnings and the contributions you have made, if any. I had it done last year and will do so again, if you wish it. We are going to soon have some kind of a pay as you go plan. At present, it is only a plan, but congress will probably pass some such law before long. Please don’t forget to write me what you want me to do about this.

Today, I would especially like to have you with me. I would like you to know how much it has meant to me to look back on the years we have been married. They have undoubtedly been the best years of my life. Honey, I am so glad that, out of all the girls in the world, I was the one you wanted. Fate was very kind to let you be the one who was meant for me, and I am truly grateful. I love to belong to you. I wish you could come on home so I could be with you all the time. Even though you have to go away and we have to be separated for all the long, lonely months, not even that can take away the feeling that I have when even I think of being your wife. There is no other job, no other life I can imagine that I would trade it for. You have made marriage to you a very beautiful adventure. I am anxious to continue through many, many years with you. Even if I never could do that I have already had a great deal more than my share of happiness. Yet, I know surely that you will come back to me and together we will have many years together. So even on this anniversary when you are so far away, my heart sends a message of love and faith to you, my dearest.

Take care of yourself and pray that you may come home soon.

                                                                                    All my love,
