My dearest Hal,

So many nice things have happened to me yesterday and today and you are responsible for both of them.  Yesterday I had two nice letters from you.  I am so glad you have gotten us some more rugs.  I like the one you have sent home so very much.  I do hope you can send them before they stop soldiers from sending presents home.  I heard they were going to do that but hope it was just a rumor.

Today a package came from you with 2 ivory carvings and 3 brass ash trays.  The carvings are lovely.  I value all the things you send so highly.  I feel we will have such a nice collection of interesting souveniors.

Hal, please don’t worry about Sam’s political up bringing.  I don’t blame you for feeling as you do.  No one could feel anything but shame for the disgraceful strikes and the fact that nothing is being done about them.  But Sam is still a very little boy and it is better that he keep his mind on little boy things for awhile.  Sam has a good mind and all we have to do is teach him to use it.  If he can think for himself he will be able to decide the course he wants to follow.  I do not think you will find him prejudiced by the time you get back.  He is very stubborn and once he gets an idea he is hard to change.  That is why I have tried so hard not to use any undue influence in your absence.  I think you should have an equal chance in shaping his character.

Saturday, I had letters from “Nana,” Billy and Elizabeth which were indeed pleasant surprises.  I had not heard a word from any of them for six weeks.  I had written “Nana” to find out for sure that she was getting Billy’s allowance.  She said she was and we were not to worry as she was getting along all right and hoped to leave Blue Ridge sometime this summer.  Nana says Sara has moved back to her house now but I haven’t seen or heard from her.

I am so glad you have enjoyed the magazines and I will renew the subscriptions right away.  I do hope you will soon get the tobacco and the pictures.  I had quite given up the idea of ever getting a package from you when this one arrived.  From Feb. 15 to Jun. 22 is quite a long time for it to travel.  Maybe I’ll get the others some of these days and you will get some too.  The best package I could get would be you.

                                                                                                all my love,
