Wednesday,
Dearest Hal,
Today Daddy
and I picked two bushels of snap beans to sell.
We eat all we can and can all we can and still we can’t keep up with our
garden. Last week we gave the school two
bushels to can. The Home Demonstration
Club cans anything anyone cares to donate to be used for the lunches for under
privileged children. It seems to me that
even the poorest people in our country are helped and looked after. I think nearly all children can pay for
lunches in times like these but of course with rationing it will not be
possible to buy vegetables and fruits as they have in the past.
Sam is very
anxious to go to school this fall but I feel he is too young. He would be a year younger than many of the
children in the first grade. I think it
would be hard for him to keep up with older children. I would rather he didn’t have to be always
tiptoeing to try to keep up with seven year olds. Sam reads a little now and he learns readily
but he gets tired of trying to concentrate and then gets very wiggly. I keep hoping that maybe by next year you
will be home again. Maybe we will know
better what we should do.
I wish you
could see my gladiolus. They are truly
beautiful. Everyone who sees them
admires them so much.
Tonight we
played some records. It is one of my
favorite past times. I hope we can have
beautiful flowers and music in our home.
The most beautiful thing about it will be having you in it.
All
my love,
Page.
