Sunday
My dearest Paul,
The letter
you wrote from Quantico
came this morning dear, and I was so happy to have it, darling. The pictures haven’t come yet, and if you
sent them by air mail they will be late getting here because while I was at the
airport this morning they announced that the 12:30 plane wouldn’t be in until
four this afternoon. I can hardly wait
to see your pictures darling.
It was so
good to hear your voice last night and this morning, dear, and it does help so
much to talk to you. It really picks me
up, darling.
Right after
you called I called Mr. Rothvock, but his wife said
he was out of town, but she was going to meet his train at 6:30 in High Point tonight. I told her who I was and left my number and
she said she would have him call me tonight, and I will see him in the morning,
dear. I went to the airport and they
mapped out a plane trip by San
Francisco. They
said if we went by plane though it would be best to leave from Greensboro. The cost from Greensboro
to Los Angeles by San Francisco is $158.35 plus $15.84 tax
which would be $174.19. To go by Texas the fare from Greensboro
is $130.00, this is direct to Los Angeles, to go
to Chicago – Denver
– Salt Lake
– San Francisco and Los Angeles we would:
Leave Greensboro Dec. 28th
12:30 P.M.
Arrive in Atlanta 3:00 P.M. – Leave Atlanta 3:30 P.M. arrive in Chicago 7:50 P.M.,
and spend the night there. On Dec. 29
leave Chicago at 9:30 A.M. arrive Omaha
12:45 noon. Leave Omaha
then and arrive Denver 3:25 P.M. and at Salt Lake
6:55 P.M.
We could spend the night (29th) and the next day and night
which will be the 30th here and leave on the 31st at 2:45
P.M. which would put us in San Francisco at 7:00
P.M. on 31st. They said we
could leave there for Los Angeles most anytime
we wanted to as there were many planes out a day for L.A. These connections are:

And there is
also one out of San F. at 3:05 am.
We would be
on United Airlines from Chicago
on. I asked if we could connect with American but they said this was the best
connections, I hope, dear, I’ve explained it clearly. I will check with Mr. R. about trains in am
and think to go by Roanoke
would be swell. As I’ve told you,
darling, it makes no difference which way we go, by train or plane, either
suits me for just as long as I’m with you is all that matters to me. The plane, to make stops and go by Chicago
etc. runs into money, but of course it’s rather quick, but then, as I say, it’s
up to you, Darling, and whichever way you want to go will suit me.
I looked in
the book that Sosuiki gave me and it read the groom
provides for: Wedding gloves, ties and boutonnieres for best man and ushers. So you were right, darling, Maybe, dear, it’s a good thing you’re asking Clyde to be and usher for I believe Vera was a little
peeved. I don’t know that she was, but I
sort of thought so when I called this A.M.
She answered and of course I asked her how she was and she said “fine,” but
nothing else. So I said “What have you
been doing?” She said, “Nothing much,”
and didn’t say word one about us or anything so I then asked immediately to
speak to Clyde. When he came to the phone I told him you
wanted him to be an usher and that you’d been trying for a week or so to write,
but with exams and working 14 or 15 hours a day you’d hardly had time to do
anything, and that’s why you wanted me to call, but that you were going to
write him this week. He talked awfully
nice and said he’d love to be in it, and, honey, when Vera found out what I
wanted with him and that we’d asked him to be in it, she grabbed the phone and
said she’d been thinking about me and wanted to do something for me, and when I
told her how busy you’ve never heard anyone understand so perfectly. She invited me and begged me to come to see
them this afternoon. I’m not going,
though. I’m going to address our
announcements. As I told you I already
have the envelopes. Did I do right,
dear, by telling the Johnson’s that the reason you hadn’t written Clyde was that you’d been so busy? You see, I thought I’d better put it on a
little because they’ve probably heard that Walter is going to be in it. I told Clyde
to go to Norman Stockton’s early in the A.M.
to see about his clothes and I’ll go by Mr. S. tomorrow afternoon to be sure
that he went. Wasn’t that funny about
Vera? She really got chummy after I
talked to Clyde and she quizzed me all about
what kind of clothes I have, etc. She
was really nice.
I’m so glad
that Angeline is coming for our wedding. Won’t it be possible for her, your mother and
father, and Mrs.West to get here in time to go to
Ruby’s? Wish, darling, they could be
with us for this. Is Octavia coming?
The best
man’s address is S/Sgt. Jack Summers (34193033) 407th A/B 2M Co., Fort Bragg, NC. Mary Ann said she wished he could get up
Christmas Day. Wonder if he could, dear?
Mrs. P.K.
Green (“Miss Pammy”) you’ve met her, darling, with
Anna and Carrie, sent us a cake plate last night, we have four presents! I’m so terribly happy, and two weeks from now
I’ll be completely happy, dear. I’m just
living for the 27th at 5:30. You’re my every thought, darling, and I
love you dearly.
Lucille
P.S. Am listening to
Sammy. Really wish, darling, you were
here with me. I miss you terribly,
I
love you,
P.S.S. Virginia Maslin can easily fill in on
Saturday or Sunday. What your mother
will wear to your wedding, you know, I said something
over the phone last night about writing and asking her and you said for me to
do so, but, honey, I think that is sort of sassy to write and ask someone what
she is wearing. Better still, you can
find out when you go home and we can tell Va. this on Saturday morning. The write-up will be complete except for this.
I am seeing Va. tomorrow, and will send the write-up to
you just as soon as she gets it finished.
I
love you with all my heart,
Lucille
