John O’Keefe writes letters to his father and mother while he travels with the United States Army during World War II. After spending several months in training at Camp Swift, Texas, from August 1944 to April 1945, he is sent overseas to serve in Asia and the Pacific. Most of his letters were censored by the Army censor, in order to prevent important military information, such as troop location and future operations, from reaching the enemy. O’Keefe reports to his parents the happenings of his daily life overseas, frequently mentioning his friendly relations with the Japanese, and always assures his parents that he’s not in harm’s way. However, O’Keefe was in Okinawa, off the coast of the main island, during the time of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. He finally returns home to Roslindale, Massachusetts in February of 1946, after World War II ended.
