John Wenzel was a mechanic in the United States Air Force. Though he was briefly based in Amarillo, Texas and Patterson, New Jersey in 1944, he spent most of his career at the LJAAF (La Junta American Air Force) base in Colorado. He wrote frequently to his sisters back home, Irma, Kathryn and Mildred. His family lived in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania. Wenzel described several rough landings and crashes at the base. He also mentioned that someone was sabotaging the engines. Wenzel often commented on the progress of the war in his letters, including references to Iwo Jima and the Battle of the Bulge.
