John McCarty lived in Marshfield, Vermont at the time of World War II. Throughout the war he wrote letters to his mother back in Vermont. He shipped out October 23, 1943 to the European theatre. He was first stationed in Great Britain. He was assigned to the 1052nd signal group, and ranked T-5, or corporal. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in early 1944. He stayed in Great Britain until fall of 1944 when he was sent to France. At the conclusion of the war, he is reassigned to the 493rd Air Service GP and relocated to Germany. The last half of 1945 he is again relocated to Rheims, France, and this is where his letters end. |
