Oliver Bilhorn was born on November 26, 1908, in Illinois. He grew up in a household with parents John, a New Jersey native, and Minnie, a Canadian native, and siblings Edna, Xenia, Catherine, Chester, and Clarence. As a young man, Oliver worked as a motorcycle mechanic. He received one year of college education before enlisting in the U.S. Army on January 7, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois. He served in the 350th Replacement Company. In our letter collection, we have letters from many of Oliver's friends and family, many of whom called him Ollie. In his letters home, Oliver writes about various duties in the Army, including Kitchen Duty. During his army career, he worked vigorously to become a Chaplain, yet was initially denied the position of Assistant Chaplain. In 1993, he lived at 1813 North Kedzie Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. Oliver died on December 25, 1994, in Illinois. He never married. |
