The Longendyke collection consists of letters written to Jack from several of his friends, most of them female. It does not contain any letters written by Jack himself.
Harold “Jack” Longendyke was born on November 23, 1927 in New York to Harold and Janet Longendyke. Jack had three younger brothers: Dennis, James, and Eugene “Joe” and two younger sisters: Gwendolyn and Janet. He attended Kingston High School and then later joined the Marines. As a Marine he served in several places, including Virginia, California, Japan, and China. One of his jobs for a while was an MP, or Military Police. The job of an MP is described as: maintaining order and law, performing Police intelligence operations, maintaining area security posts and security operations, acting as resettlement and interment officers in various interment operations, and acting as support for mobility operations. After returning to the United States, Jack was married twice, his second marriage being to Kay Violette. Jack passed away on September 12, 2006 in his hometown of Kingston, New York. |
