Stanley Socha was a soldier in 689th Engineer Base Equipment Company. He corresponded with his wife Sophia, of Utica, New York, almost daily from February to April of 1944. We have 39 letters from Sophia to Stanley over these three months. Sophia often wrote about the weather, how much she missed him, what she would do around the house and most importantly, gossip of the neighbors. Stanley surprised Sophia for Easter by sending her a small gift: four chocolate bars and some prayer books. According tothe letters, Stanley stayed in the United States from February to April of 1944.
In the letter Sophia wrote on March 31, 1944, she stated, “Somehow I am afraid to face the fact that you could go across, just like the other boys have. As long as you are in good old U.S.A. I will be happy.” However, towards the end of April, at the end of our collection, she expressed concern about Stanley’s company possibly being transferred overseas. Sophia loved Stanley very much and missed him terribly. On March 24, 1944, she wrote, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder, whoever wrote that saying sure knew his stuff.”
